Attic Renovation

Renovating your attic can open up an entirely new perspective to your home. Adding an additional level of living space may provide an extra bedroom, office, or playroom that you did not have before, thus increasing your home’s value and enhancing your aesthetic surroundings.

Start by inspecting the rafters. Do they appear solid? Is there evidence of termites or other pest infestation? You may have to add supports if the structure is starting to look worn or weak. Check out the venting areas. Are there windows that open? Is there a usable whole-house fan that perhaps needs only a maintenance update? Do the vents need vacuumed or cleaned out?

Next, examine the flooring. Are the floorboards stable? Will you need to install a sub floor? Can it be refinished or will you need to carpet this area? Move on to the walls. Are they sturdy? Does the insulation show? You may need a certified insulation expert to clean up loose insulation, as fiberglass or other types can be hazardous to humans who are not wearing protective gear. Will the walls need to be rebuilt in areas? Does the roof leak? Check all these structural elements and make sure they not only appear to be in good working condition, but also comply with industry standards.

Then you can start planning the cosmetic features of your attic space. Decide whether to paint or paper the walls. Keep in mind that if the area retains moisture or extreme heat, wallpaper may peel over time. You may want to finish the sealing, put wood paneling on the walls, and install tiles for flooring. Hire a contractor if you are unsure about how to do any of this work yourself. Then you will be ready to pick out furniture to make your new space functional and livable.
