Renovating the Basement

If your basement is currently unfinished, you may decide at some point to renovate this area to provide more functional living space. Some people turn the basement into a recreation room while others reclaim it as an extra bedroom or office area. Your property value may increase if the basement can be improved or expanded to increase your home’s square footage of living space.

First, decide how you want to use the area. This will give you some direction as to how to renovate the space. You might decide to use part of the basement for storage and remodel only part of the area, such as one room out of two or three. Determining whether this will be an office or bedroom will help you decide which room to tackle.

Then create a list of expenses for having the work done. You will need to figure a builder’s expenses (unless you plan to do most of the work yourself). You also may need an electrician and plumber, even if it is only to have them inspect your work in these areas to make sure it complies with utility standards and is up to code. Another major expense will be your materials, such as lumber, tools, tile, poster board, and flooring. Don’t forget to factor in the smaller items like fixtures, carpet, drapes, screws, nails, and other essentials that cannot be overlooked.

Next, you will need to plan a schedule for the work. If you are doing it, make sure to clear vacation days with your employer. If you are self-employed, look for a week or two when you expect to be less busy than usual. Even if you hire a builder or contractor, you should plan to be around part of the time to answer questions or provide feedback for completing the job.

As the work is getting done, you may want to shop for the new area’s furniture and furnishings. Try to coordinate the new items by theme, genre, and color with other pieces in your home. Remember, your newly redeemed living space should fit in rather than stand out.
