Home renovation is a challenging project that requires
planning, time, and a budget. Start by jotting down a few ideas, with
their estimated cost and the time needed to complete that phase of the
work. As you review the list, you will get a better sense of how much
work you want to put into your remodeling effort at this point, and how
much you prefer to leave until later.
Restoring a house can involve a series of smaller tasks, such as
replacing cupboards or installing a new door. Or it may require the
removal of walls or digging a basement. After determining the scope of
your plans and attaching both a budget and a timeline, you can start
looking for contractors unless you plan to do the work yourself.
Finding a contractor should not be hard. You can start in the telephone
directory’s yellow pages and business listings. Then check the local
newspaper ads. Ask home supply dealers to make recommendations. After
you get a few names, call the Better Business Bureau to make sure they
check out okay. Interview them on the telephone, and if you like what
you hear, invite them over to provide a free estimate, and ask them to
leave a written copy.
The contractor can provide information about where to obtain the needed
materials and how much these may cost. Some contractors are able to
procure discounts from certain providers. Check delivery dates and
product warranties to be sure you will have what you need and can
afford.
Make arrangements to pay the contractor by installments. Issue a check
for one-third at the beginning of the job. Pay another third when the
work is half done. The final check can be given upon satisfactory
completion of the renovation to written specifications.
Remodeling your home can be an exciting time for creativity and a
fresh, new look when you take time to plan, budget, and hire the right
contractor.
